9 Easy Ways to Keep Fit and Healthy at Work

The idea of a “workplace” often involves sitting in a desk for eight hours straight, tied to the computer screen with one hand holding the telephone, and the other one busy navigating the computer mouse. Sounds familiar right? If you’ve been in the corporate world for any period of time, chances are you have insufficient time to do your workout as much as you want to. Sure you can’t bring the office to the gym but you can actually bring the gym to the office!

You know, or you may have heard how a sedentary lifestyle brings you harm like cigarettes do. Inactivity coupled with incorrect food choices can certainly increase your risk of developing heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases. But just a few changes in your work routines can be really helpful in staying fit and healthy!

Skip the elevator and take the stairs.
Shortcuts aren’t always the best route! Of course, this is not possible if you always arrive in the office late! Make sure to be at least 15 or 30 minutes early so you can spare some time exercising on the stairs. Doing this regularly can bolster your energy levels and keep you in good physical shape.

Drink lots of water.
Hydration is an essential aspect of good health. It is crucial in the digestion and detoxification process. Keep a bottle of water near you so every time you feel like drinking, you will have no reason not to! Tired of water? Why not sip some orange juice or lemonade?

Hold meetings on the go.
When you’re doing some brainstorming activities with your colleagues, do it while walking instead of sitting! You may also conduct meetings outside the office room so you and your associates can have time to walk – the simplest and most convenient form of exercising.

Find reasons to walk.
Maybe you can be a little more kind to your colleague and take those piles of documents to the other room and do the photocopying stuff by yourself. You just don’t benefit someone but also yourself, health wise! During coffee breaks, get up from your desk and stroll around the office vicinity instead of peeking on your Facebook account.

Stretch the stress out!
Did you know that just 10 minutes of stretching is enough to revive your lost energy and get you going for the rest of the day? Stretching has a lot of health benefits, including increased flexibility, improved blood circulation, balance and coordination, and better heart health.

Exercise during your lunch time.
At least 30 minutes of physical exercise during your lunch break is one great way to enjoy all the benefits of exercising. Head to your office gym and sweat it out! Don’t have a gym in your workplace? Why not encourage your colleagues and request from your boss to set even just a small space for your exercising facility. If you explain to your boss how exercising will boost productivity at work, he or she will not think twice in approving your proposal!

Participate in sports and recreational activities.
Most companies have their own yearly tournaments involving various sports and games like basketball, volleyball, tennis, etc. Take it as an opportunity to improve your health!

Prepare your lunch.
Fast food is not a very healthy option. It is often high in sodium, saturated and unsaturated fats, preservatives, and other unhealthy ingredients. Home-made foods are still the best in supplying you energy!

Don’t eat at your desk.
Take your lunch somewhere a bit farther from your office, probably in the pantry, or at the nearest park. This allows you to walk before and after your meal – a great way to improve your digestion!
